Print in Place Chess Set with Captive Pieces

Build this full chess board with all 32 playing pieces all in a single print. The pieces are separate objects but are held captive within the board and move along notches during game play. Use paint to darken the appropriate square and pieces. The pieces can be removed and reinserted by pushing against the back of the board to splay the notches apart.

To be honest, this is more of a design challenge and printer “torture test” then a functional chess set. The board is 204.2 mm square, which is the smallest footprint I could manage while maintaining the geometry necessary to hold the pieces captive with a minimum of 3mm for necks of piece "pedestals" and board "stems." Another design constraint was to ensure that any piece could move to any other square on the board, even if it was "boxed in" by other pieces, in the case of opening with a knight.

I would love to see if anyone can come up with a similar design with a smaller footprint!

The bottom is thin to reduce material, so you’ll need to monitor the first layer closely and restart if there are any errors. The build plate needs to be perfectly level and calibrated.

Files include the full board and pieces, separate pieces in case you need to replace any, and a board structure without pieces if you want to add your own.
